CPL. Roman Ducksworth born in 1934 and died April 9, 1962. Occupation , black military police officer stationed in Maryland
Roman Ducksworth was riding the bus home to see his Wife and 5 kids. There were two different accounts about the events leading up to Ducksworth's death. The NAACP took on the case stating, Officer Kelly Shot Ducksworth after Ducksworth refused Kelly's order to move to the back of the bus. The other report was that Ducksworth had attacked officer Kelly and that officer Kelly was simply defending himself.
The Freedom Ride took place in 1961. Though the Freedom Ride is well known in civil rights history. In 1946, the Supreme Court ruled that group seating on interstate buses was banned. However as with everything that the Supreme Court decide on, its ruling only works if the people of America and the governments at state and local level agree to support such a ruling. The 1946 ruling was not accepted by the South.
Roman Ducksworth was one of the people that were killed for no reason. He was important to the civil rights act just like Martian Luther King Jr or the other famous people that were killed for a reason and without a reason. Ducksworth may have been killed for a reason or maybe he wasn't either way there was no trial or anything that put Officer Kelly up for consequences
After Ducksworth was killed there was court which said that Ducksworth was drunk and that Kelly shot in self defense. Ducksworth's family disagrees and says "what did officer Kelly have to be afraid of?" 51 years later Ducksworth's family is still waiting for justice.
In my opinion Ducksworth was killed for no reason. Others say he was refusing to get up or attacked officer kelly but nobody will know because Ducksworth isn't alive and even if Kelly still was alive he probably wouldn't tell the truth. He might have attacked Kelly or he might have refused to get up, but no one will know because of what happened back then.
